Summer Treat

Growing up my family went camping three weekends a year, Memorial Day, 4th of July, and Labor Day. We always had a huge group that went with us and I have more memories from the years of camping then is imaginable.

One hot summer weekend my two cousins and I sat on the wooden deck of my grandparent’s camper eating watermelon. I can't remember who started it but we were in the middle of a spitting contest. Who could send their seeds sailing the farthest. We sat there quickly taking bites of the juicy watermelon. The juice making our hands sticky as it ran down our arms and dripped off our elbows to the ground. Each bite filled with a gush of sweet juice. We each would quickly chew our watermelon to get to that little seed and send it across the grass. I don't remember who ever won that competition but this is a memory with my cousins that I will never forget. We sat there laughing and nudging each other so their seed wouldn't go as far.

I still love watermelon to this day. In fact it was the only thing I could eat for the first three months of my pregnancy. So it comes to no surprise that my daughter loves watermelon. It is such a wonderful summer fruit and I can not wait to sit outside with Belle eating watermelon this summer.
